Ryan Reynolds and Justin Baldoni are in a big legal fight. Baldoni is suing Reynolds for $400 million, saying he damaged his reputation. On Tuesday, Reynolds asked the court to remove him from the lawsuit. He admits his movie character “Nicepool” made fun of Baldoni. But he says that feeling hurt is not a reason to sue.
Why Is Reynolds Asking to Be Removed?
Reynolds’s lawyers say he only shared his opinion. They argue that opinions are protected by law. Baldoni says Reynolds called him a “sexual predator” in private. But Reynolds claims that if he truly believed it, it is not defamation.
Baldoni also says Reynolds used his power in Hollywood to harm his career. He claims Reynolds made their talent agency, WME, drop him as a client.
Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, says Reynolds tried to ruin Baldoni’s reputation on purpose.
What Do Legal Experts Say?
Celebrity lawyer Chris Melcher thinks the court may not remove Reynolds right away. The judge might ask Baldoni to give more proof. Melcher says Reynolds can’t escape the lawsuit just by saying he believed what he said. If Baldoni shows Reynolds ignored the truth, the lawsuit could continue.
Reynolds’s Response
Reynolds’s team says the lawsuit is just Baldoni’s complaints, not a real legal case. They also mentioned Steve Sarowitz, Baldoni’s business partner, who promised to give $100 million to their company. Reynolds’s team says they may ask the court to make Baldoni pay their legal fees.
In a statement, Reynolds’s lawyers explained:
“Mr. Baldoni says Reynolds called him a ‘predator’ in private. But that is not defamation unless Baldoni can prove Reynolds didn’t believe it. The complaint does not prove that. In fact, it shows Reynolds really thinks Baldoni’s actions make him a ‘predator.’”
What Happens Next?
Experts believe the judge will not remove Reynolds right away. However, Baldoni might need to show more proof. If the court thinks Reynolds acted with bad intent, the case will continue.
Hollywood and fans are watching closely to see what happens next.
